Top Reasons Learners Fail Their Driving Test

12 June 2026 5 min read

Roughly half of practical tests end in a fail. The good news? The same faults come up again and again — and they're all preventable.

1. Not making effective observations at junctions

Pulling out without properly looking. The single most common serious fault. We drill mirror checks and proper looks into every junction until they're automatic.

2. Poor mirror use

Forgetting to check mirrors before changing speed or direction. It sounds basic, but under pressure it slips. We make it muscle memory.

3. Incorrect positioning

Straddling lanes or positioning wrong at roundabouts. Leeds roundabouts are notorious — we'll practise the busy ones until they're routine.

4. Response to traffic lights

Creeping over the line on red, or hesitating on green. Timing and confidence come with targeted practice.

5. Steering control

Late steering, or mounting kerbs on tight turns. Our structured manoeuvre sessions fix this fast.

How we prevent these

Every Pass With pupil gets mock tests on the roads around their test centre before their real test. You'll experience test conditions, hear the examiner-style instructions, and iron out nerves. Most fails are preventable with the right preparation — that's exactly what we provide.
