Automatic vs Manual Driving Lessons: Which Is Best?
It's the most common question we hear: should I learn manual or automatic? There's no universal right answer — but there's a right answer for you.
Manual lessons (£38/hr)
A manual licence qualifies you to drive both manual and automatic cars. You'll learn clutch control, gears, hill starts and the mechanical rhythm of driving.
Pros: Full licence flexibility, often cheaper cars to buy, deeper mechanical understanding. Cons: Steeper learning curve, stalling in early lessons.
Automatic lessons (£40/hr)
Automatic cars have no clutch and no gear changes. You focus entirely on steering, observation and the road.
Pros: Simpler, fewer simultaneous tasks, usually faster to test standard, ideal for nervous drivers. Cons: Limits you to automatic cars, slightly higher hourly rate.
The deciding question
"Will I ever need to drive a manual?" If the answer is yes — for work, family, or hire cars abroad — learn manual. If you'll only ever drive your own automatic, save yourself the stress and learn automatic.
What about electric cars?
Every electric car is automatic. As the UK moves toward electric by 2035, automatic licences are becoming far less limiting than they once were.
