Leeds Driving Test Routes Explained
Leeds has two practical test centres we use — Fernville and Colton Mill — and the routes around each have a personality all of their own.
The Fernville routes
Fernville sits just east of the city centre. Routes typically take in the busy Harehills area, the Roundhay Road junctions, the city edge, and residential streets for manoeuvres. Expect:
- Busy multi-lane roundabouts — observation is everything.
- Hill starts — the area has plenty of slopes.
- Narrow residential streets with parked cars for the manoeuvre (usually parallel parking or bay parking).
- One independent driving section of around 20 minutes, part of it following a sat-nav.
The Colton Mill routes
Colton Mill serves east Leeds and the LS15 area. Routes take in the A6120 Outer Ring Road, the A63 Selby Road and the Colton Retail Park junctions — real east Leeds driving with multi-lane roundabouts and faster A-roads.
The tricky spots
The Roundhay Road and Harehills Lane junctions catch out nervous learners at Fernville, while the A6120 roundabouts trip up learners at Colton Mill. Bus lanes with time restrictions also cause fails if you miss the signs. We'll practise all of them.
How we prepare you
We run mock tests on the roads around your chosen centre. You'll drive them enough times that on test day, nothing feels new. That familiarity is the single biggest confidence-builder — focused test preparation designed to help you build safe, confident and independent driving skills.
