Driving lessons for nervous learners
If the thought of driving makes you anxious, you're in the right place. PassWith specialises in calm, patient driving lessons for nervous learners across Leeds. No pressure, no judgement — just gentle, structured progress at your pace.
Driving anxiety is far more common than people think. Whether you've had a bad experience, failed a test, or simply feel overwhelmed behind the wheel, we understand — and we can help.
Many of our pupils come to us after struggling at other driving schools or nearly giving up entirely. Some haven't driven for years. Some are autistic or have ADHD and need a different approach. What they all have in common is that they passed — not because we pushed them, but because we helped them build real confidence at their own pace.
How we help nervous drivers

We help you understand why test nerves happen and how to manage them — not just tell you to relax.
Breathing & Calm Techniques

Mock Test Confidence
We build up to full mock tests gradually, so by the real thing, you've done it all before.

Learn to drive in a Ford Puma Gen-E electric vehicle.
Jake provides automatic tuition in a Ford Puma Gen-E — a fully electric car with smooth acceleration, regenerative braking and a quiet, calm cabin that's ideal for learners and nervous drivers alike. As with all automatic lessons, you'll never stall or worry about gears.

About the Ford Puma Gen-E
Jake, PassWith's founder and a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor, delivers automatic tuition in a Ford Puma Gen-E — a fully electric vehicle. The Puma Gen-E combines the practicality of a compact SUV with an all-electric powertrain, making it a comfortable and capable car to learn in.
Because it's electric, it's always automatic — there's no clutch, no gears and no engine noise. That means a calmer learning environment with fewer controls to coordinate, so you can focus on the road from your very first lesson.
See our Terms & Conditions for full details.
Differences you'll notice in an electric vehicle
Electric cars drive differently to petrol or diesel vehicles. Here's what learners should know before getting behind the wheel of an EV.
No clutch pedal
Like all automatic cars, an electric vehicle has no clutch pedal. You use just two pedals — brake and accelerator — so there's no stalling, no hill starts to worry about, and no gear coordination. This frees up your attention for observations and road positioning.
Automatic transmission
Electric vehicles are always automatic. There's no gear lever to operate — the car manages everything. For learners, this means fewer controls to master, so lessons can focus on road skills like hazard awareness, junctions and manoeuvres from an earlier stage.
Smooth acceleration
Electric motors deliver power instantly, so acceleration is smooth and immediate without the lag or gear-shift interruptions you get in a petrol or diesel car. It takes a little getting used to — especially the responsiveness at low speeds — but most learners adapt within the first lesson.
Regenerative braking
When you lift off the accelerator in an EV, the motor works in reverse to recover energy, slowing the car down. This is called regenerative braking, and it means you'll use the brake pedal less than in a conventional car. Your instructor will explain how it works and help you adjust your pedal feel.
Quiet operation
Electric cars are noticeably quieter than petrol or diesel vehicles — there's no engine noise and minimal vibration. This can feel unusual at first, and pedestrians and cyclists may not hear you approaching, so good observation becomes even more important.
EV controls
Electric vehicles often have digital dashboards, touchscreen controls and one-pedal driving modes. Your instructor will walk you through the controls before you move — indicators, wipers, lights, the digital display and any EV-specific features like drive-mode selection.
From a manual or petrol vehicle
If you've driven a manual or petrol car before — or you're learning from scratch — here's what changes when you switch to an electric vehicle:
- No clutch or gears — two-pedal driving from the start
- Instant, smooth acceleration without gear changes
- Regenerative braking means less use of the brake pedal
- Quieter cabin — more awareness needed around pedestrians
- Digital dashboard and touchscreen controls to get used to
- Charging considerations — but not something you'll manage during lessons
About your licence
Passing your practical driving test in an electric vehicle gives you an automatic-only driving licence. This is the same rule that applies to passing in any automatic car — there is no separate "EV licence" or special category for electric vehicles.
An automatic-only licence allows you to drive any automatic car, including electric and hybrid vehicles. If you want to drive a manual car in the future, you would need to pass an additional practical driving test in a manual vehicle.
Refresher driving lessons — rebuild your confidence.
Already hold a full driving licence but feeling rusty? Our refresher lessons are designed for licensed drivers who want to rebuild confidence — whether you haven't driven in years, are moving from manual to automatic, want to master motorways and parking, or need to get back behind the wheel after a difficult experience. No test, no pressure — just calm, structured sessions at your pace.
Manual £38/hr · Automatic £40/hr. Lessons are usually booked in two-hour sessions.
See our Terms & Conditions for full details.
For full licence holders: Our refresher driving lessons are designed for drivers who already hold a full UK driving licence. If you don't yet have a licence, take a look at our standard driving lessons instead.
Refresher lessons tailored to what you need
Whether you're returning after a break, switching to automatic, or rebuilding confidence after a difficult experience, we cover exactly what you want to work on — including automatic refresher lessons.
Haven't driven for several years
If you passed your test years ago and haven't driven since, you're not alone. We'll start on quiet residential streets to rebuild your muscle memory for moving off, steering and stopping, then gradually reintroduce junctions, traffic and busier roads at a pace that feels right for you. Most returning drivers feel comfortable again within a few hours.
Moving from manual to automatic
If you hold a full manual licence but want to switch to an automatic — whether you've bought a new car, are moving to an electric vehicle, or simply want a simpler drive — our automatic refresher lessons help you adapt quickly. You'll get used to two-pedal driving, the different feel of regenerative braking and the simplicity of no clutch in a calm, structured session.
New car confidence
A new car can feel unfamiliar even for experienced drivers — different visibility, controls, dimensions and technology. Whether you've upgraded, downsized or switched from a manual to an automatic, we'll help you get comfortable with your new vehicle's controls, size and features so you feel confident from the moment you set off on your own.
Motorways
Motorway driving is one of the most requested refresher topics. If you passed your test before 2018 and never had motorway lessons, or simply avoid motorways because they feel daunting, we'll build your confidence with joining, lane discipline, safe following distances, overtaking and exiting. We cover the M1 and M62 around Leeds, starting at quieter times and building up to peak conditions when you're ready.
Parking
Whether it's parallel parking, reversing into a bay, or negotiating tight multi-storey car parks, parking is a skill that fades without practice. Our parking refresher lessons in Leeds target exactly what you want to improve — we'll drill the reference points, observations and steering techniques until parking feels straightforward again.
Roundabouts
Leeds has its fair share of complex multi-lane roundabouts — the A6120 Outer Ring Road, Colton and Cross Gates junctions can catch out even experienced drivers. We'll revisit lane selection, signalling, observation and positioning on the roundabouts that matter most to you, until the process feels automatic again.
Busy roads
If you find yourself avoiding city-centre traffic, one-way systems or peak-hour congestion, our busy-road refresher sessions rebuild your confidence with lane discipline, bus-lane awareness, pedestrian zones and multi-lane junctions. We'll take on the roads you've been avoiding — calmly and at your pace.
Driving after a collision or difficult experience
If you've been involved in a collision or had a frightening experience on the road, getting back behind the wheel can feel daunting. We work patiently and without judgement — starting on the quietest roads, rebuilding your confidence step by step, and only progressing to busier routes when you're ready. We won't rush you, and we won't pressure you into anything you're not comfortable with.
General confidence
Sometimes there's no single reason — you just feel less confident than you used to. Our general confidence refresher lessons are entirely tailored to what you want to work on. Tell us what feels uncomfortable and we'll build a calm, structured session around it. No test, no pressure, just steady progress at your pace.
What's included
You already know how to drive.
Refresher lessons aren't about learning from scratch — they're about dusting off skills you already have and rebuilding the confidence to use them. Most returning drivers are back to their best within just a few hours.

Nearing your test? We'll help you feel prepared. Mock tests under real conditions, the roads and driving situations around Leeds test centres, and targeted practice on the faults that catch learners out.

Common test mistakes
The same faults catch learners out. We'll help you avoid them.

Forgetting mirrors before changing speed or direction under pressure.
Incorrect road positioning
Straddling lanes or wrong positioning at roundabouts.
Hesitation at traffic lights
Creeping on red or failing to move promptly on green.

We practise the local roads.
Leeds has two practical test centres we use — Fernville and Colton Mill. The roads around them have a character of their own: busy multi-lane roundabouts, hill starts, narrow residential streets for manoeuvres, and a 20-minute independent driving section with a sat-nav. Test routes can vary.
- Roundhay Road and Harehills Lane junctions
- Hill starts on Leeds' slopes
- Narrow streets with parked cars for manoeuvres
- Sat-nav independent driving section
- Bus lane awareness and time-restricted signs
